If you feel like you can’t get content out fast enough, do this. [Ep. #312]

Do you ever feel like you can’t get your content out fast enough? I know I did. I made 4,500 videos over the course of a decade and I got burnt out. I took two years off of making actual YouTube videos because I felt like I just couldn’t keep up, but now .

So what’s the reason SO many creators struggle with this? Getting good content out regularly often comes down to one thing: Ditching perfectionism to focus on human connection.

Perfectionism

There are two kinds of people in the world – Those who struggle with analysis paralysis and those who just shoot things out without taking too much time and energy to make it perfect. These two people have to learn from each other.

There’s a huge pro to having everything ironed out and perfected. But once you start doing it, you will always find ways to make it better and you will adjust your process accordingly. So at some point, you just have to start doing. Then, go from there.

As educators, we fear people will be overwhelmed by all the tips and strategies we share and they never actually publish their videos because they know they could be better. That is the last thing that we want to do! If you just start producing, will learn and develop as you go.

Personally, I don’t have a ton of time. I’m married, have 7 kids, a business, etc, but I wanted to start I had to ask myself, “What do I have time and capacity to do?” So I decided to record and publish the whole podcast while I’m on the go. And that’s what I did. I got a little lightening port microphone and made it happen. Maybe I’m at the park or the pool for my kids and I have some time and I record. And guess what, it works! Can you hear the kids playing in the background, sure. But it’s more important to create than for it to be absolutely perfect.

Putting a timeline on yourself can also be very helpful. Mark on your calendar a date and time that you will be hitting record and just do it. If it’s not perfectly planned and your title and thumbnail aren’t perfectly constructed first, oh well. It’s happening. Or maybe it’s the production that slows you down? Then, pick a date on your calendar that you publish that video. Will it be perfect? No. But it will happen by Friday at 8pm no matter what.

-Now if you tend to be the opposite type of person, then completely disregard what I’m saying here. But if you are a perfectionist, you need to learn to trust yourself more. You’ll be surprised what you can create.

A perfectionist needs to accept and fully embrace that creating is messy. You will make mistakes. There will be videos that tank. You’ll have thumbnails that don’t perform even though you put tons of time and effort into them. But, better results don’t come from fancy editing. It comes from making someone feel something. And that comes from just being authentic, not being perfect.

Spend more time planning your story arch and less time on production.

POWER TIP YouTube is optimizing more and more for podcasts! If you’re struggling to keep up with all of the engaging editing, podcasts can be more lax, so if you’ve been thinking about starting a podcast anyways or are looking for a more lax version of content, you might consider doing podcasting on YouTube.
