Jeff’s Guide to Creating your Ultimate YouTube Video [Ep. #191]

We all want to know how to make more money, get more views, and more subscribers, so we can reach more people with our message and change their lives.

But how do we attain this lofty goal?

This week, we hung out with our friend Jeff Bartsch (from Story Greenlight) to figure out what it takes to make the ULTIMATE YouTube video that people actually want to watch. We narrowed it down to 4 “frameworks” that make up the ultimate YouTube video. Here’s what we came up with.

  1. Identity. Why does this video exist? Who is it for and what’s the value? People don’t care about how fancy your editing is – they care about the value it brings them. If the content brings them value, they’ll come to your video and keep coming back for more.
  2. Function. Your content can’t DO everything and be everything. In other words, you need to have a goal for your video. One video shouldn’t generate a lot of ad revenue, get tons of views, send people to your e-mail list, all while building community with your viewers. When to try to do, or be, everything, you accomplish nothing.
  3. Structure. How can you keep people watching? This is how you’ll structure your video. You usually have a hook, your intro or branding, the content, and a call-to-action. You need to figure out how to deliver the value in this step.
  4. Engagement. How does this piece (or video) make an impact on the viewer? How can you add story to your content? This will more deeply engage the viewer and help them relate to your content (even when it’s more educational). YouTube is becoming more and more story driven and less technical (keyword and SEO) driven.

Each of these 4 frameworks are necessary to create a powerful video that will reach more people and change more lives.

Which framework are you “winning” on and which one could use some work?
