Small Channel YouTube Strategy: Growing from 0 to 10,000 Subscribers in 2020 [Ep. #199]

I hope you’re having a great week so far! Today, I wanted to bring one of the strategists on my team in to share how to get from 0 to 10,000 subscribers in 2020. Lennon is an actual rockstar and leads one of our Video Labs courses.

In our latest podcast, Lennon shares all about what it really takes to grow a channel from 0 to 10K subscribers in 2020.

Here’s what he had to say.

1. Start with your mindset. This is one of the most overlooked elements that Lennon sees working with our clients. You HAVE to believe that what you have to share with the world is worth hearing. Don’t worry about what other people are thinking or how many subscribers you have – just work hard and focus on doing the best you can to get better and spread your message.

2. Know your audience. There’s over 500 hours worth of content being uploaded to YouTube every minute. WHY should people care about yours? What value is it providing? When you think about who you make videos for, who is this person? What are their interest? What are their pain points? What do they want? You need to know this person’s story, not just their demographics. This will help you make content that knocks it out of the park every time for them and that they’ll actually want to see.

3. Know the value you bring. Value on YouTube is complex. People may come to learn something from your channel, but they can leave and fall in love with your personality. We’re wired to connect with each other on an emotional level. When you think of your ideal audience (the person you are creating videos for), keep the educational value in mind. You don’t want to waste their time. If you want to build trust and get that person to “fall in love” with you, you also need to incorporate some sort of entertainment value, or storytelling, to your videos.

Here are some questions to think of to help you brainstorm these things:

  • What does your ideal audience member want?
  • What do they need?
  • What do YOU want?
  • What do you need to feel fulfilled on your YouTube journey?

4. Analyze, rinse, and repeat. Once you establish these things, implement them and look through your analytics 1x a month to see what’s working. If something is working, keep doing it! If it’s not, try something else. You won’t know what’s working and what’s not until you try and review the results.
