Get OUT of THIS Mindset to Grow on YOUTUBE [Ep. #236]

My team and I have worked with thousands of creators. We’ve done 1:1 work, group coaching programs, and projects with big name brands to the creator who hasn’t even hit record yet.

And with each amazing client we’ve worked with, we’ve noticed the same themes that can hold a creator or brand back from growing on YouTube and in their business.

Do you feel like that’s you?

Like something is keeping you stuck?

Like you’re doing everything the experts are telling you to do and you’re just still not getting the results you want?

One of these things may be holding you back.

  1. You’re too focused on the numbers. Analytics are great. You want to be aware of your analytics and the data and have an idea of what’s going on in your channel to use that data to grow. Where it becomes a problem is when you notice every little subscriber or view count fluctuation. When you are refreshing subscribers daily! (It happens more often than you think) Instead of focusing on the numbers and how you want more subscribers, think about how you can serve the current people in your audience. If you serve them well with tons of value, trust us, more will gladly come!
  2. You’re looking for what you want to see in the numbers and not what they’re saying. A lot of creators have a preconceived notion of whether their channel is working or not. Whenever they go to their analytics, they gravitate to what they already believe about their channel. But, you HAVE to be objective if you want to experience growth. Remember, YouTube is hard. If it was easy, everyone would do it! But you can learn new skills and get better if you’re willing to put in the work. If you have NO idea how to read your analytics, we work through some of this in our consultations as well as our Video Labs program.
  3. You’ve lost sight of why you started your channel. If you don’t have a strong enough ‘why’, you’ll fail on YouTube. At some point or another, adversity will come your way. YouTube policies change, you may get hate comments, you may lose money in your business, and if you don’t have a deeper, purpose-driven reason for starting your channel, it’ll be really, really hard for you to stick with it and/or to grow.
  4. You never knew why you started your channel. We see this often with entertainment or lifestyle channels. Maybe you started a channel as a way to get your creative outlet out, maybe you just wanted to make money, or to start learning how to film and edit. That’s fine if you’re a hobbyist, but if you’re trying to grow on YouTube, it’s important to take a step back and ask yourself why you’re doing this, what you enjoy, and what you’d like to make videos about? Where do you feel like your skills and gifts are and what are you passionate about? Usually, somewhere in the middle of that is what you should be doing!
  5. You’re too consumed with what you think you should be doing instead of what you’re passionate about. You might find something that works on your channel and you continue to make videos about that thing (which is not bad advice), but you also don’t want to pigeon hole yourself either. You can make content both for you (and what you’re excited about) as well as content that your audience wants to see. This is a big reason we get calls with our clients – so don’t be worried if you’re stuck in this place. We’re here to help!
  6. You’re afraid to get vulnerable. I know this is deep and if you’re an education channel or a business, you may be tempted to glaze over this, but I wouldn’t. Even people you’re trying to teach or sell to are human beings. They have stories, hopes, fears, dreams, and desires. You’re not just presenting information to someone, you need to connect with them if you want them to engage with you. You have to let the human sides of you show through your videos to form that connection with your viewers that keeps them sticking around and gets new viewers engaged with you.
  7. You’ve lot sight of what the YouTube strategies are for. Creators have a tendency to blame the algorithm for not growing on YouTube, as if it is some all-powerful being holding them back from achieving their YouTube dreams… but the algorithm works based off of what real human beings on watching. A lot of creators don’t want to swallow the pill that their content may not be all what they think it’s cracked up to be. Or they put so much energy and focus into YouTube strategies, they forget they’re making videos for real human beings… not robots.
  8. You’re doing YouTube because you feel like you should and not because you like it. We see this more often with business owners than creatives. You hear more and more people saying you’ve got to be on this platform when in reality, it may not be the right time for you, you may not enjoy YouTube (and need to say no right now or outsource this), or you need to take a break.

Do any of these sound familiar?

Don’t worry if they do. My team talks you through how you can work through each of these road blocks to get back to growing on YouTube again in the video above.

Hope this helps!

Keep changing lives,

Tim
