How are you doing?

This week, I took a little time off YouTube. My family and I drove to a state park to get out of the house and go camping.

It was a ton of fun with canoeing, s’mores, and playing in the great outdoors.

This is one of the things I’m the most thankful for when it comes to being an entrepreneur. This is one of the reasons I do what I do. To be able to be with my family.

It isn’t all camping trips and eating s’mores though.

There’s a lot of behind the scenes stuff when it comes to being an entrepreneur and starting your own brand or business.

Not everyone needs to “be their own boss” and this lifestyle isn’t a fit for everyone.

Do you wonder if it’s really right for you sometimes? Here are 20 statements you can evaluate to figure out if entrepreneurship is right for you.

  1. I don’t like being told what to do by people who are less capable than I am.
  2. I like challenging myself.
  3. I like to win.
  4. I like being my own boss.
  5. I always look for new and better ways to do things.
  6. I like to question conventional wisdom.
  7. I like to get people together in order to get things done.
  8. People get excited by my ideas.
  9. I am rarely satisfied or complacent.
  10. I can’t sit still.
  11. I can usually work my way out of a difficult situation.
  12. I would rather fail at my own thing than succeed at someone else’s.
  13. Whenever there is a problem, I am ready to jump right in.
  14. I think old dogs can learn — even invent — new tricks.
  15. Members of my family run their own businesses.
  16. I have friends who run their own businesses.
  17. I worked after school and during vacations when I was growing up.
  18. I get an adrenaline rush from selling things.
  19. I am exhilarated by achieving results.
  20. I could have written a better test than Isenberg (and here is what I would change ….)

Did you answer yes to 17 or more of those statements?

That means entrepreneurship is likely a good fit for you. It doesn’t mean that you should be an entrepreneur or if you scored lower that you shouldn’t. But this can give you an idea of where you are on the entrepreneurship spectrum.

There are also some things that aren’t on that list that I hear often about entrepreneurship and I think they’re common misconceptions.

  1. I like to take risks. People think being an entrepreneur means you love taking risks, but people don’t choose to be entrepreneurs because they like risks. There are risks either way as an entrepreneur or an employee. No company is guaranteed to stay in business forever. You could easily lose your job as an employee. Entrepreneurship does come with no guarantee of being paid or your business failing just as much as working for someone else.
  2. I want to make a lot of money. Being an entrepreneur won’t automatically make you rich. In the beginning, you’ll actually probably be struggling financially. Usually, you’re trading a steady paycheck for creativity, excitement, and autonomy.

There is one way you can see if entrepreneurship is for you or not.

You can test it on a smaller scale first.

Your YouTube channel is the perfect place to start! There’s little upfront cost and you can learn about business through different channels. Go through experiments creating different business models, systems, etc.

Ask other business owners what they do with their time or other creators in your space. Here are four questions that can give you some insight into what they do and if it’s right for you.

  1. What does your business do?
  2. What role do you play in your business as the owner?
  3. How do you get clients and customers?
  4. What do you have to do to serve your customers?
