My heart has felt heavy a lot this year, for so many reasons, but one thing I’ve thought about more often than not is the amount of people who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19. Because I’ve lived it.

Before I started Video Creators full-time, I got laid off.

We were a family of 6 at the time and I didn’t know what I was going to do. I just knew I needed to figure something out FAST to provide for my family.

So, I ended up diving in full-time (more like over time) creating content, working on my blog, and working till the wee hours of the night and thankfully, it paid off. I ended up blogging full-time and working on some other ventures until Video Creators was born.

All that to say, I know what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck and wonder how you’re going to feed your family at the end of the day.

I knew if there was any way I could help anyone else that had gotten laid off recently, I needed to. In our latest podcast, I grabbed my friend Nate Dame, from Profound Strategy, to talk about business and how to build your business by driving more traffic to your website.

Here are some helpful things to know if you’re trying to follow your passion, build your own business, or just create something that could help you provide for your family.

  1. Study who’s winning (in your space) and beat them. This is actually a good rule of thumb for both YouTube and in the blogging space. SEO used to focus so much primarily on how to “optimize” the metadata to get people to your blog or your video, but now it’s all about who provides the most value. Do a quick search on who is talking about what you’re talking about, look to see what the top 5 are doing, and start to think about how you can provide even MORE value.
  2. If you’re just starting out, focus on creating valuable content. Everyone starts from zero! I know it can feel tough trying to build a following when you’re starting from nothing, but if you are creating content that provides value to people, they WILL stick around! This isn’t usually an overnight thing for creators. Expect that it may take some time to build up your blog, YouTube channel, etc.
  3. Get familiar with Google Analytics. Thankfully, YouTube has created a much easier way for creators to understand their analytics in YouTube Studio. Google Analytics are a whole different ball game and can be confusing for anyone who isn’t familiar with it. Nate recommends figuring out what you’re trying to accomplish, start learning what’s relevant to that goal in your analytics, and then work your way backwards. You can learn anything on Google/YouTube now – utilize those free articles and guides to learning analytics!
  4. Focus on getting 2K search queries a month. As you are building up your website, a good goal our friend Nate recommended is to get 2,000 search queries a month for your website. .

Do you have a website? If not, it may be time to create one.

Thanks for reading!

Keep changing lives,

Tim
